I recently interviewed Professional Makeup Artist & Motives Beauty Advisor Jacqueline Menconi.  Jaxx is not afraid to step out of her comfort zone daily to share her love for the business and be a partner to her colleagues. She is breaking boundaries within the beauty industry and continues to build her unbreakable empire. Way to go, Jaxx! Thank you for inspiring us and constantly helping women around you to succeed.

1.  How were you introduced to Motives?

I was introduced to Motives Cosmetics around late 2010 by a complete stranger while I was working at a Sephora. While working there, I was simultaneously building up my tv production and bridal clientele. By October of 2012, I had decided to become a partner with Motives and register my internet franchise business with Market America.


2. What made you want to learn more and eventually partner with Motives?

I grew up in a very entrepreneurial-minded family. I went to college for TV Production/Broadcasting and also took classes in General Business. Working as a Video Producer after college, I was heavily in the professional/corporate world. I had to be business savvy & needed to network efficiently to be good at my job. Once I decided to switch careers to makeup artistry, I carried those same values and skill sets with me. If you are a freelance anything, whether you realize it or not, you own a business and you need to treat it as such.


As a Makeup Artist, having a professional quality product line to offer my clients was a no brainer. Clients always asked me what I was using on them and before Motives, I would instruct them to go to the appropriate stores where they would buy $50-$300+ worth of cosmetics. I was making the stores and big brands richer and totally missing the boat as a business woman. The fact that Motives allows me to retail completely customized makeup that I create for my clients was a brilliant concept to me. I had wanted to make a name for myself as a luxury on-location Makeup Artist and being able to blend a high end custom foundation and powder was the exclusivity factor I was looking for. Even more, it was exactly what my clients were looking for! So many have trouble finding the right foundation. The color could be ok, but the formula is too drying. The formula is good but the color is too yellow or pink, so they buy 2 different shades to mix at home. That’s expensive and time consuming, especially if you’re not a makeup artist.


The only thing that I had reservations about before partnering was whether Motives/Market America was considered “one of those things.” I did my due diligence, truly studying the Motives/MA business model and compensation plan, and then comparing it to direct sales companies out there. This was when I finally appreciated the immense difference between MLM companies and Market America (the parent company of Motives). Market America (MA) was so clearly not MLM and that fact coupled with the quality of the products had me chomping at the bit to register my business. MA is the real deal and unlike any other company I’ve ever researched. 


3. How have you leveraged the training & events to build your belief to propel your success?

The Global Meeting, Training, Seminar System, aka the GMTSS, is priceless! I have business partners all over the country and the GMTSS means I don’t need to physically be there in order for them to get educated & be successful. The GMTSS is a standardized education & training system conducted (in person and virtually) in major cities and small towns all over the globe. I live in New Jersey, but my partners in California, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Ohio are covered! The fact that we have access to online trainings is pretty incredible, too. For those partners who may live in more isolated areas, they are still able to plug in and learn how to grow their business.


4. In what way have you maximized your existing business as a Pro Makeup Artist by incorporating Motives into your kit?

I partnered with Motives in 2012 when I had recently quit my job as the Laura Mercier counter manager in Saks 5th Avenue. I was still building my freelance business and finally getting traction. When I partnered with Motives and started retailing their ready-made products and mixing up custom blends, that was when I noticed a huge burst in getting booked. Word started to spread and I kept getting referral after referral from all industries- bridal, tv, commercial, independent film, corporate shoots, photo shoots, etc. 


Looking back, I can be certain that not only was it my professionalism and skills as a Makeup Artist, but it was my entrepreneurialism and posture as a business owner that made this boost in bookings possible. Motives helped me with that because of the exclusive luxury services I had added to my repertoire as well as the personal & professional development I gained by attending all of the company trainings and big corporate conventions. 


Over the next few years my business grew in every aspect. By 2016, I was busier than I could handle with commercial, tv, and corporate video shoots. I tallied up the amount of jobs I had given away to other Makeup Artists (around the world) within a 6 month period… it was more than $20,000 in referral jobs. That was money I did not make because I was already booked on other gigs and I attribute a good portion of this success to what I have learned throughout my partnership with Motives. 


Even more, the mere fact that I own a Motives franchise was how I was hooked up with my most recent long term gig. Since a lot of pro Makeup Artists are affiliated with Motives, we network and pass along work whenever possible. In 2017 a Makeup Artist had posted about a TV job coming up that she could not take. She was looking for Motives affiliated Makeup Artists who had experience working in television. I commented, we connected, and she ultimately recommended me to the Executive Producer of the show, True Conviction. A few months later, I was hired! Our 3rd season just started airing in 2021 on Investigation Discovery. Had I not been partnered with Motives, this ongoing 3 year job would have never come across my plate.


Lastly, I’ll mention the discount we get as distributors on all of these pro-quality products is great, and not limited to cosmetics.


5. What do you feel is the best way to expand your Motives team?

The best way to expand your Motives team is to simply keep spreading the word and leading by example. Be authentic and learn how to be a great listener. Know the ins & outs of how MA is structured and why it’s unlike any other company in existence. Read business books and attend as many virtual and in-person trainings as you possibly can. 

6. What are you most excited about in regard to long term goals leveraging Motives?

As a freelance Makeup Artist, you are only as good as your last job. Sure you can have a busy spell, but sooner or later you will have a couple weeks off and will be sweating bullets not knowing when your next paycheck is coming. Although I may have been unemployed for most of 2020, my retail sales increased and I started offering more virtual services.
